Te Araroa, Day 95

Feb. 7, Cameron's hut to Otira Hotel, 34,86 km, km 2005,71, 12 hrs

This day is long and challenging. It includes numerous river and stream crossings, muddy terrain, and a steep climb up to Harper's Pass at the very beginning. On top of Harper's Pass, there is no view due to the thick clouds. As we descend, we catch a glimpse of the valley ahead, which we must traverse. The descent is extremely steep and rocky, requiring us to slide down parts of it on our backsides.

Navigating through rocky terrain and crossing rivers with strong currents proves to be daunting. X, who is always ahead, waits at these crossings to provide instructions on the safest way to proceed. The presence of sandflies makes the waiting not a pleasant affair.

The rivers command my utmost respect, as their strong currents necessitate distributing my weight evenly on both feet and using trekking poles to prevent being swept away. Even the simple act of lifting a leg to move forward becomes a struggle against the relentless pull of the current.

After traversing thorn bushes, I finally reach the last river crossing. On the other side lies a field with cattle that we have to cross before we will reach the road leading to Arthur's Pass. About 10 km down the road lies a hotel in a small town called Otira. I call ahead and secure a room for the night before we resume our journey on the road.

Despite my determination, exhaustion sets in after about 4 km, compounded by intense back pain and cramping back muscles. Thankfully, at Morrison Bridge, I hitch a ride to the hotel. Upon arrival, I discover that it is touted as the most intriguing hotel in New Zealand, filled with various antique items and featuring an electric massage chair in the common room—an enticing prospect after a grueling day on the trail.
