Feb. 24 and 25, 2024, Wanaka, zero days
Saturday, February 24th, is a rainy day, so we decide to take a rest. Zero days are always filled with necessary planning, blogging, resupplying, eating, doing laundry, and minimizing walking as much as possible, especially with my hurting feet, particularly the right one.
Upon reviewing the next section, we find it unappealing due to lots of steep climbs up and down. The forecast predicts another rainy day while we would be in that section and upon realizing there will be another approximately 5-hour river walk, we decide to seek an alternative route.
X discovers the Cardrona Valley road, which we can follow to Arrowtown. This is also the town we will reach if we continue along the next TA section. Accommodation is available in Cardrona, about 25 km from Wanaka, and then it's another 27 km to Arrowtown. Although the road leads over a saddle, it involves a gradual climb.
I book a room at the seemingly famous Cardrona Hotel for Monday. By taking this route, we save a day or two of walking and give ourselves an additional zero day in Wanaka.
Wanaka is a very touristy town, and although the lake is picturesque, on zero days, all I want to do is avoid moving my body. Thus, the second zero day is spent on laundry, sleeping, resting, and planning - the usual routine.
On the way to picking up Pizza on Saturday after the rain:
Sunset, seen from the rooms window on Sunday. No extra walking on zero days...
