Nov. 2, 2023, Kaitaia
I wake up on Nov. 2 and despite everything I did to feel better I am feeling worse.
At midday I have a video consultation with a General Practitioner. My travel insurance uses the app "Air Doctor". Via this app one can have a consultation any time with a medical doctor who is available anywhere in the world. I want a consultation within one hour and get two people to choose from. My very nice doctor I meet up with is talking to me from Mexico City. We both agree that I am having tonsillitis and she even sends a prescription for an antibiotic via email. Unfortunately New Zealand does not accept prescriptions from other countries. I could have had a video consultation with a General Practitioner from New Zealand but at a much later time and I did not want to wait.
I need an antibiotic. After a long 1 hr walk on a busy road (no taxis or busses here) there is a hairdresser. I am exhausted and enter the place asking for directions. Google maps has left me and I feel I am quite off my track and my head is just not feeling normal.
The people there bring water and tell me I need to go back to where I came. I can't. I am done. As it turns out later, I have been walking with a fever.
A guy who just sits down for a cut says he will bring me to town when he is finished. I am overly relieved. Turns out he lives near the hairdresser and he does that extra drive just to help me.
At the hospital I am asked to come back in 2.5 hrs. I go to get food but then sit and wait there. I am more than done.

After 6 pm I get processed in the hospital. Everyone is overly helpful and nice. I never had such an experience before in a medical practice or hospital.
They confirm the fever, very low blood pressure and tonsillitis. I get the antibiotics. I have to walk back to my accommodation. When I arrive there I get scolded by the Filipino owner. I call her Filipino mum because she brings me lemons and knocks at my door to ask if I need food or anything else. Everyone is so nice.
So she scolds me and says she would have driven me to the hospital and picked me up again.
I am glad I am finally back at my room but I have to find a new accommodation. It takes 2 days until the antibiotics work, until then I can't start walking and this room is not available anymore.
I call every place here but everything is fully booked due to an event taking place this weekend. At the end I get a bed in a dorm for two nights. So tomorrow I will be moving.
