Friday, August 2, 2024, Störbacken to Atostugan, km 26,93, total km 48,35, 7:53 hrs
I start walking at 6:16 a.m. The sky is completely covered with dark grey clouds. I have about 8 km to go before I reach a lake that is supposed to be crossed by rowing a boat for approximately 800 meters.
While walking, I can see rain in the distance, so I try to walk faster. Just as I reach the lake, the rain arrives. I see an old shed and head towards it to check if I can get in for shelter. I can, and I am relieved. The rain is now coming down heavily. I put on some warmer clothing, eat some bars and a tortilla with cheese from a tube, and even do a manicure. When I'm finished, after 1.5 hours, the rain has just stopped. I resume walking.
In the distance, I see that there is only one boat on this side of the lake, which means the other two boats are on the opposite side. This would require me to row three times: first to the other side, second to tow a boat back to where I started so there's a boat available, and third to row back to the other side. I can't manage that; I would barely manage one stretch. So, I have to walk around the lake. There is no straightforward way to do this, so I end up doing a 13 km road walk until I rejoin my trail. At this point, it follows the road for another 6 km, so in total, I walk 19 km on the road. My feet get very tired and start to hurt. After walking a total of 27 km, I set up my tent and call it a day.
When I go to pick up water from the nearby river, I notice a fireplace with ashes still glowing. I decide to have my dinner there, as the smoke will help keep the mosquitoes away. After dinner, I go to bed and am asleep by 6 p.m.
