Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Åtnikstugan yo Tjäkkelestugan, 17,6 km, total km 136,47, 4:56 hrs
I went to sleep around 7 p.m. and slept well. It was the first time I had a hut to myself in Sweden, and I really enjoyed it. When I leave at 6:15 a.m., the clouds hang low, and I can't see the sun. The trail starts with some forest walking, followed by a climb above the tree line, and then back into the forest, but it’s not as bad or wet as yesterday. Still, my shoes and socks get wet.
After just under 5 hours and 17.6 km, I reach another hut. My plan was to cover 23 km, but I decide to check the weather forecast first, using my Garmin inReach satellite beacon. If there's still heavy rain expected on Thursday, I’ll change my plans. I don’t want to walk 26 km in heavy rain—it's not enjoyable, and I wouldn’t be able to see any views either.
The forecast predicts no sun and some wind but dry conditions for tomorrow, with heavy rain and even thunderstorms on Thursday. This means I’ll adapt my plans. I’ll stay in this hut tonight and walk to a town called Klimpfjäll tomorrow. It’s 20 km from here, and I would have usually passed it a few kilometers further west. So, I’ll arrive there on Wednesday and skip the last day to Borgafjäll. I'm okay with that since I’ve already seen the most beautiful parts.
The hut has two rooms, and I settle into the smaller one with a bunk bed. Over the course of the afternoon, more people show up but set up their tents outside. One couple tells me that the other room is full of mosquitoes, so they pitch their tent. There’s also a Belgian couple with their child, who also set up a tent. I’m glad to have my own little space again.
