Last Preparations pre-PCT

April 13 - 14, 2024

After I could check into my room on April 12,  I went to do some chores. It took longer than expected, and I finally returned to the room at 8 pm. 48 hours since I left home, I finally got to bed. Sleep did not last long, but it was good.

The next two days before my start on the PCT I didn't want to do anything, still, at least for today, April 13, it wasn't an option. On Friday, I learned that there was no place in El Cajon where I could get some gas for my stove. The only place I could get some was REI, 2.5 hours away by public transport. This morning, I embarked on that journey to get a gas cartridge. I also bought a belt since mine didn't show up when I packed at home, and I purchased new socks. I had some socks sent to El Cajon, but the post office returned them to the sender.

Then I took a different route back. Altogether, the trip took me 6 hours. On the way back, I met a fellow hiker, a German who will start a day after me. He too had to go to REI to replace his hiking clothes that he had accidentally left at home. Since I will have to take it slow on the trail, I expect to see him again soon, overtaking me.

The plan for tomorrow is to not go out, except for food. It's good to stay indoors. What I have seen in these two days walking around here and taking public transport has left me somewhat shocked. This country has major problems. I am still digesting what I saw.
