PCT, Day 4

Published on 27 April 2024 at 20:00

Thursday, April 18, 2024, Mt. Laguna to Oriflamme Canyon, 22,4 km, total km 88,38, 7,5 hrs.

We leave just before 7 today. It’s easier walking as it mainly goes downhill or is quite level. We have many scenic views. In the distance, there is Mt. Jacinta, which we will have to cross over in around 10 days, still covered in snow.

After 20 km, we reach the site where we will stay tonight. It’s a very windy and exposed place with no water; we had to carry it there. It’s impossible to set up a tent in that wind, so we all have to cowboy camp. I’m not good with wind. It chills me down. Everyone finds a spot somewhere scattered between bushes, trying to get as little wind as possible. It doesn’t make sense to set up the sleeping pad now because of the wind. We can only do it if we use it right away.
The ground consists of fine gravel, not great for the pad, and the spot I found has red ants. There’s one other spot, but it’s very exposed. I have no idea how this is going to work.

The place has like a 360 degrees view and we watch the sunset. It is beautiful. Then everyone disappears on the ground inbetween the bushes. I sleep in my sleep clothes plus a merino shirt, plus rain gear, and puffy. All night the wind is raging but I can keep warm. The moon is bright. There are not many stars to see. Many satellites though.

First view in the morning:

And it is getting better:

Some more impressions along the way:

And this point marks the first 50 miles that we walked:

And two miles later there is this sign. 2600 miles to go:

Last water for today. We have to carry a lot until we will get to some water tomorrow:

Along the way:

And somewhere up there we find our spots each, to cowboy camp:

This is going to be my spot for tonight:

But first we enjoy the sunset:

In my windy bed.... No tent possible;
