PCT, Day 11

Published on 4 May 2024 at 08:00

Thursday, April 25, 2024, Thule Spring to Paradise Valley Café, 23,94 km, total 240,91, 7:15 hrs

I start walking at 6:10 a.m. when it is 5 degrees Celsius. I wear my merino shirt, but soon have to put on my rain jacket and pants as well as warm gloves because of the strong, ice-cold wind. Walking through clouds, I don't shed the extra layer of merino until noon. The temperature remains between 8 and 12 degrees and the wind persists.

I finally arrive around 2 p.m. at Paradise Valley Cafe, where I enjoy a veggie burger and fries with Navigator and Double Dinner, who have been there for about two hours already.
After the meal, we hitchhike to Idyllwild and stay  overnight in the state park in our tents.

Idyllwild is a charming place, almost like an oasis in the desert, with towering pine trees and surprisingly large squirrels, some as big as cats, as the park ranger at check-in informed us. They apparently have a unique defense mechanism of shooting blood from their tails when caught by a rattlesnake.

Given the bad weather forecast for Friday, we will stay in a cabin from tomorrow 4 pm until Sunday.

I buy some food and find the "Talenti" ice cream I have been looking for. It is freezing cold but I have to eat that ice cream because I need the jar. I will put oats in there in the evening with water and have them ready in the morning. The ice cream makes me freeze a lot and I have to finish it eating in the tent i

wrspped in my quilt. After that I pick up a pizza and then get ready to sleep.
