Thursday, May 2, 2024, Whitewater, Zero Day
Kristin, our trail angel, has to go to Beaumont for the day, and we can get a ride there with her. There is a big Walmart that we want to use for resupply.
On the way, she stops to show us a local attraction: two big dinosaurs that were built a long time ago by a man who loves dinosaurs. We have a short stop there just to take pictures.
After Double Dinner and I finish shopping at Walmart, we go to a burger place. I get some fries. Then we take a bus to Cabazon, which is a small town between Kristin's place and Beaumont.
We both have a parcel sent to the post office there. I get a new Frogg Toggs rain jacket. The one I bought in size S has far too short arms and tight hips. I get size L now. That will work better. I leave the smaller jacket in the hiker box at Kristin's place. Maybe another hiker will have use for it.
From the post office, we try to hitch back to Whitewater. It is only 4 miles but there is no bus. It is very hot. While trying to hitch, I am watching a coyote that walks on the other side of the road, looking for some food.
There is not much traffic on that road, and after an hour, we decide to move to the parking lot of a discount shop.
There is no traffic either. Just one car passes us, and I have a funny encounter:
I am standing there, three plastic bags around me filled with my groceries, and I hold a cardboard on which I have written our destination.
When the guy in the pickup sees me, he offers me a dollar note through the window. He must think I am one of the homeless people around. I do not take the dollar but ask for a ride for us. But no luck.
In the end, we take an Uber to Kristin's place. We are back at around 3:30 pm. I sort my food, prepare dinner, and talk to a German hiker who lives in New Zealand. I also say goodbye to Double Dinner, who hikes the Mission Creek section to Big Bear, despite the warning from the PCT association not to hike it.
