Tuesday, June 18, 2024, last tent site before Kearsarge pass to Onion Valley parking, 18,87 km, total km 1144,83, ca. 7:00hrs
Today I will have to leave the Sierras for resupply. It means that I will have to walk all day on a side trail over Kearsarge Pass to get to a road. The pass is at 3,600 meters, and I struggle on the way up. I am still not acclimatized to the elevation.
The views are very beautiful though all along.
On top of the pass, I can see another mountain range, which is clearly a desert range. In between the Sierras and that range there is the desert valley.
The descent from the pass is long and quite steep, but still very beautiful with rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. However, I know I won’t be going up here again. This is actually the way back into the Sierras, but I feel like I’ve had enough of the hardship. I will have to figure out how I will continue.
I get down to a parking lot around 2 PM. When I want to call a trail angel asking for a ride, I don’t have reception, but soon a woman arrives, unloading two hikers, and I ask her if she can take me down the mountain. She drops me at the next town, and I can catch a bus from there to Lone Pine. I get a bed in the dormitory of a hostel. The first thing I do is take a shower and use the Laundromat across the street.
Tomorrow I will have to figure out what to do.
