PCT, Day 23

Published on 16 May 2024 at 08:00

Tuesday, May 07, 2024, Lake Silverwood "rio" to Choo-Choo Campsite, mile 343,6, 22,48 km, total 433,13 km, 8:22 hrs.

When I wake up, the tent is completely wet from condensation, including the groundsheet. Despite my efforts to dry it, it takes too long. I pack everything wet and leave at 8 am.

Fortunately, there was no visit from the bear, and my belongings in the shower room remained intact. Since my food was stored in the shower, I had breakfast at the group camping picnic tables before departing. I'm relieved that no park rangers showed up.

Today's journey covers about 20 km until I reach a highway with a gas station and a nearby McDonald’s. The walk, as usual, offers stunning views but starts uphill again, with the next days promising even more ascents, up to 2800m. Uphill climbs slow me down considerably.

Upon reaching the highway, I encounter a vendor selling cut fruits. I purchase a jar and enjoy it before indulging in a large portion of French fries at McDonald’s. Finding shelter from the wind indoors feels almost cozy. After eating, I refill my water and continue. About 3 km away, I find tent sites and decide to stop there. It's 4:20 when I arrive, a good time for me.

Unfortunately, there's no water available. The water I brought from McDonald’s must last for dinner, breakfast, brushing teeth, and the first 6 km tomorrow.

The surrounding hills shield my tent from one side, while the other side faces railway tracks where cargo trains pass non-stop, their tooting echoing all night. Though noisy, it's likely the reason no one else will stay here tonight. Luckily, I have earplugs, just in case.

At 7 pm, I hear someone behind my tent, indicating I won't be alone tonight as it seems.
