PCT, Day 42

Published on 18 June 2024 at 08:00

Sunday, May 26, 2024, Mile 607,5 to Mile 628,7, 33,85 km, total km 870,24, 10:39 hrs.

Last night, I had to get out of the tent at 9. The moment I stepped out, I heard an animal close by. A bear or a mountain lion? I stood still for a while, but then I really had to go and dig a hole. Fortunately, nothing happened. I also had a lot of pain in the small intestine area. Still, nothing seems to change.

This morning, after another hole digging, I left the campsite at 6:10. No wind today, and I am so glad. After the first 15 km, there is a water cache. I have to carry enough water for the next 20 km today, plus one liter for tonight, plus water for tomorrow morning. I take 4 liters, and my backpack is far too heavy. It is uncomfortable. There is also a trail angel at the cache offering beer, soft drinks, and fruits. I have to decline because of my digestive problems.

The next 20 km until we stop for the day are sandy and involve hot desert walking. It is hard. So dusty and hot, and it seems to go only uphill. The backpack is very uncomfortable.

I am glad when we finally reach a place where we can set up the tent, and I am extremely thirsty. Four liters were not enough, but I just can’t carry more. Tomorrow, there will be a cache in 6 km and then again nothing for the rest of the day.

There are good views from the campsite, and I enjoy a beautiful sunset before falling asleep.
