Sunday, June 24, 2024, Gilmore Lake to Bayview trail trailhead, 13,61km, total km 1176,69, 5:06 hrs
I start at 6:00 am. There was no bear last night, but the mosquitoes are up early too, waiting to suck my blood.
The walk is beautiful. Passing over Dick's pass, there is still a lot of snow especially on the other side of the pass but it is manageable. At a junction I leave the PCT and use the Bayview Trail to get to a road at Lake Tahoe.
When I reach a parking lot, a ranger asks me if I had seen "the bear". It turns out that 30 minutes ago, a big bear tried to break into cars. There are about a hundred cars here. The ranger shows me a picture of the bear and tells me that the bear went up the trail I came down. What a pity; I really would have liked to see the bear.
I hitch a ride back to South Lake Tahoe - slightly disappointed that the Cypertruck that passed me and that I had seen before in that town does not give me a ride. This vehicle looks like from a different planet.
Back at the Mellow Mountain Hostel I spend a few hours booking buses, trains, and planes. It will be a very long journey back home with some stopovers along the way.
I also have some nice talks with some other weary hikers.
I will take a break, but I will be back for some longer hiking, starting in August. I plan to document it on this page in a new tab. The hike is not going to be in the USA.
I have seen the Cybertruck a few times at South Lake Tahoe and now, while I was hitching from the trailhead back to town it approached me. Too bad it did not stop to take me on board.
