PCT, Day 69

Published on 9 July 2024 at 08:00

Saturday, June 22, 2024, Echo Lake Trailhead to Gilmore Lake, 18,25 km, total km 1163,08, 7:52 hrs

Trail angel Leilani picks up me and four other people at 7 and drives us from the Mellow Mountain Hostel to Echo Lake trailhead. I walk 18.3 km. I am tired. It feels like all my energy is gone. The surroundings are very, very beautiful, though, and I pass many lakes.

I have been struggling for a while now, wanting to go home. Six months of walking within seven months seems to be enough for the moment. My body needs a big break and good food. My brain has been trying to argue against stopping and was quite successful, but now it will lose. I will have to get over Dick’s Pass tomorrow, but then I will try to take a side trail that gets me to a road.

If I would start fresh now, I am sure to be walking the whole thing. To walk the Sierras, to walk everything but with New Zealand just before and this hike being not a walk in the park, I need a break and some less demanding terrain - as well as better food.

At the tent site I try to do all chores as quickly as possible. I have to wear my rain gear because the mosquitoes are attacking me constantly.
